the creature feature show…

I found these old sketches from our junior year @SJSU for a warm up project that Prof Mcclusky had us do for our wearable technology concept for Nokia…the premise was great…design an alien creature that lived on you (be it symbiotic or parasitic relationship) and tell a story about the relationship that the human and alien shared…this was a 1 week warm up and we had to also build it in CAD (we were promised SLA’s…we’re still waiting for those…)

Here’s a shotgun blast of some of my concepts…i ended up going with the top left concept…basically it lived on your face and when you sneezed, rather than you using your hands to cover your face or just sneezing out in the air, this creature would spread its gills over your mouth and eat all your mucus, boogers, and what not…this was during the time of the Bird Flu…

Alex n Dan please post your sketches if you can find them, ya’ll had some cool ones…Dan’s ate your brains if i remember correctly, to make u forget things…

veggies

I thought this would be funny.  I used to date a girl that was vegan, and she wouldn’t eat anything with a face.  I used to joke that if veggies would scream, maybe she would start eating meat again.  Quick sketch pencil on paper.veggies

taking bart to the battle of the bay

Last week,  Dom and I went to the Battle of the Bay, A’s vs Giants…and as luck turned out its the 20th Anniversary of the Earthquake Series.

Being Eighties Kids, with Dom a Giants fan and myself an A’s fan…we had a blast, recalling  memories of 80’s baseball in the Bay and growing up on opposing ends.

I also took Bart this time to the game…it had been awhile,  so of course i got overwhelmed with all the people and had to draw them all, and when i got to the coliseum i went insane…i love how diverse and beautiful the people of the Bay are, just so many faces and stories to tell…here are some that i caught…

A’s win! take that Dom…oh yeah, the Giants did take this series in the end last week…

Side or Profile View

I have to admit that Tomasz Migurski really reinforced this idea when he saw my sketeches. Sometimes it is better to start from a side or front view of a drawing. It makes it easier on the brain and allows us to think about and break down the components of a design. Once we are comfortable with the design we can tackle it in perspective using the side and front views. Also try drawing with a really dark pen to boost your confidence in committing to your lines. This sketch was done with a fine pilot pen and Sharpies.

Rosendahl Watch

rosendahl copyMy roommates all put in and got me the Rosendahl watch for my birthday. Sweet. Used a pilot retractable fine tip. Fine tips are pretty difficult to use for shading. I think in the future I won’t attempt that same technique.

In Memory of Michael Jackson

These sketches were done in loving memory of Michael Joseph Jackson, the King of Pop.  The gathering of people I see on  TV, the Internet and in every other area of life…speaks so strongly to the fragility and love we all share as humans.  Micheal stood for much more than music and dancing to so many people….unity, peace, happiness and equality…(the music and dancing did help thou :).  Even with all the difficult periods in life he faced, people  still stood by him.  The joy and memories he brought to so many people across the globe will surely be missed but also remembered.  I still remember getting my copy of Thriller, which was my first fill lenght album.  I listened to it over and over and over…  Thanks for the memories MJ, and peace to the Jackson family.

The Power of Thumbnails

I think people over look these valuable drawings. An exploration of ideas is vital to seeing all the possibilities in design.

I know there have been many motorcycle mechs designed but I’m sure not all possible designs have been explored.

Gavino & Kike

I wasn’t sure what to post next. Opportunity presented itself last night. I went to my very talented friend’s gig @ Mezcal’s in San Jose. We both did what we love. He played and I sketched and listened. Given I came in kinda late but I still managed to put few lines in. Gavino plays just about any string instrument under the sun – guitar, vihuela, sitar, ukalele, etc… I heard him play sitar once, which moved me very deeply, I am looking forward to sketching that up sometime. With him and his buddies (Enrique and Jose) jam away every Tuesday. If anyone of you likes spanish, latino, improv music come down to Mezcal downtown San Jose every Tuesday night – I believe it starts @ 7pm.

Kike is on the left and Gavino is on the right I didn’t have the time to manifest Jose (bass) :/. All that you see is about 30 min worth on Bienfang 360 and bk ballpoint. Enjoy.

Quick box perspective demo

So, i know that King had posted a box demo a few days back, but we had gotten feedback that there were issues with it…namely the perspective…of course King likes to do hyper, distorted boxes for fun, but that may confuse people, especially those of us who just started sketching…doing the hyper, distorted boxes are a great exercise, but you have to understand the basics of constructing a box in perspective first, hence this post…

This is actually a perspective exercise that we would follow up with our calisthenics (Point to Point, Ellipse, and Arches)…it really helps to rack up the mileage and practice your perspective…hope this helps!

The new demo is located in our Tutorials + Techniques section…feel free to leave feedback and comments…

Beautiful fighter 2.0

More of a futuristic character. This is pencil on bondpaper, then traced with Graphics 360. This drawing was conceived in thumbnail sketch form and drawn larger. This was not done by life drawing, but by using perspective and known proportions:

Process: Planning(thumbnails), rough proportions, rough sketch, finalizing costume, alt costume1, alt2.

Icebreaker…

PowerUp robot. copy

So here is my first sketch I would like to share, one of many, many, many, to come…

Popped into my head few days ago transferred onto paper (Hammermill Color Copy 28lb) and bk ballpoint. I like how the marker (Copic or ChartPak) lays on that paper and the pen rolls smoothly, it scans nice and clean too.

The idea popped into my head after I walked the Zoo and saw a grizzly sitting there upright on its behind. I wanted to get the sitting gesture right and positions of the arms so I tried it a few times before I commited. The perspective is a bit shaky because I did not construct any boxes or axis lines… this is what happens… just showing this as an example of what not to do.

I am really glad and honored to be here. Enjoy. Thank you.
