Return to the ID Room…where it all began…

It’s always so nice to step into the old studio where you:  spent days and nights sketching and cad’d it up in, drowned yourselves in rockstar drinks, almost OD and die on redline, crashed out on the couch or table and woke with magoo all up in your face, got yelled at for bringing foam into, glued gi joes to the ceiling, discovered goatse and tubgirl (do not ask), puked all over the tables after a rough night of drinking, etc….

….Dom and I broke back into the room where it all started for us this past weekend (the old ID Studio @ SJSU) and were so happy to see sketches on the walls, messy tables, new couches (thank god), and the biggest time waster-the dart board…

Here are a few of the sketches on the walls…you guys make us so proud and keep on sketching…and thanks ID Room for all the memories!!!

Assignment #8…sketch breakdown

This was our Assignment 8 for Dom’s class (he let me be his sidekick to help him out this semester)…we basically had them take an existing product and break it down to its fundamental primitive shapes, and then had them closely study its overall form and sketch it out in perspective with orthos…most our students only had photos from the web to reference so it was a bit challenging…the ultimate goal for this assignment was to understand how to see past all the small details (logos, finishes, etc) and really hone in on the proportion, the build up of primitive forms,  how to sketch a simple product with those primitives  in multiple perspectives, and working/referencing the orthos…

Dom will be posting up the upcoming demo’s soon, we just gotta scan em in…so here are quick snap shots of the building process

Always start with roughed out orthos to understand the overall form and proportions

play around with perspective with rough thumbnails

study the subject matter, its design, primitive forms and subtleties

now that we have the supporting material we can start to sketch it out…

IDSketching visits Viz Alliance @SJSU

Back when Dom and I were in school we started this after school sketchclub, Viz Alliance…our mission was simple, to get people in our program excited about sketching and to keep at it everyday (its all about the mileage)…we also pulled in the Illustration/Animation cats to get this “Alliance” lifted…we showed the Gnomon workshop videos and brought in professionals in Industrial Design and Illustration to do live sketch demos for us…

This last Thursday, the new Viz Alliance crew (Tony, Jeff, & David) invited the IDSketching guys, John & Spencer to do demos (digital and analog)…and everyone had a blast…Spencer represented the Prismacolor pencils and markers, while John rocked the Wacom using Sketchbook Pro…these super talented cats work @ Astro Studios http://www.astrostudios.com/, and run the best online sketch demo/tutorial site on the net, http://www.idsketching.com/…make sure to check it out!!!….and thanks again to Tony, Jeff, & David for keeping Viz Alliance going and spreading the word…
